This Privacy Policy explains how Contour (“Contour”, “we”, “us” or “our”) handles information in connection with the Contour app for iPhone (the “App”). Face photos are sensitive, and we treat them that way. Our guiding principle is simple: your data stays on your device by default, and anything that briefly leaves it does so only to make a feature work — never to be sold, profiled or retained.
1. Our approach: local-first
Contour has no account, no sign-up and no login. You do not give us your name, email or phone number to use the App. Your scans, metrics, plan and settings are stored on your iPhone, not on our servers. We designed the App so that the most sensitive thing you create — your face photos — lives with you.
2. Information stored on your device
The following is created and kept locally on your iPhone:
- Scan photos — the front and profile images you capture, stored in the App’s private storage on your device.
- Scan metrics and scores — measurements such as jaw angle, symmetry, posture score and puffiness derived from your scans.
- Your plan and activity — session history, streaks, reminders and preferences.
We do not have access to this data. It is removed when you delete it in the App or delete the App from your device.
3. How your face photos are analyzed
To turn a scan into measurements, the relevant photo needs to be analyzed. When you run a scan:
- the photo is sent over an encrypted connection through our secure processing service to an AI vision provider that performs the analysis;
- it is used once, only to produce your results, and is never stored on our servers — our proxy holds it in memory only for the duration of the request;
- the AI provider may retain the submitted images for up to 30 days solely for abuse and misuse monitoring, after which they are deleted — they are never used to train models;
- the resulting metrics are returned to your device and stored there.
In short: photos are stored on your iPhone and are sent only to produce your results — we never keep a copy. They are never used to train advertising or third-party models, and they are never sold or shared for marketing.
4. Analytics we collect
To understand how the App is used and to improve it, we collect anonymous product-analytics events (for example: a session was started, a scan was captured, a screen was viewed). These events:
- are tied to an anonymous identifier, not to your name, email or Apple ID;
- never include your photos, facial landmarks, or scan metric values — they carry flow facts only;
- are used in aggregate to improve the product, not to profile you individually.
When you choose “Delete everything” in the App, we send a final deletion event and rotate the anonymous identifier so future activity is not linked to past activity.
5. Purchases and subscriptions
If you buy a subscription, the purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store; we never see or store your payment-card details. We use a subscription-management provider to confirm your entitlement (whether your subscription is active) using an anonymous identifier. This lets the App unlock Premium features without an account.
6. Service providers
We rely on a small number of processors to run these features. They act on our behalf and are limited to the purposes described here:
- An AI vision provider — performs the scan image analysis described in Section 3; submissions are never used for training and are deleted after a short abuse-monitoring window (up to 30 days).
- Our cloud proxy — securely forwards analysis requests so that provider keys never live in the App; it does not store your photos.
- A product-analytics provider — receives the anonymous usage events described in Section 4 (never photos or metrics).
- Apple and our subscription-management provider — handle billing and entitlement as described in Section 5.
7. What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not use your photos or metrics to train advertising or third-party models.
- We do not require an account or your contact details.
- Nothing you create leaves the App unless you export it.
8. Data retention
Your on-device data is retained until you delete it. Scan photos sent for analysis are never stored by us; our AI provider may retain submissions for up to 30 days solely for abuse and misuse monitoring, after which they are deleted — they are never used for training. Anonymous analytics events are retained in aggregate for a limited period to support product improvement.
9. Your choices and rights
- Delete everything, one tap. You can permanently wipe your photos and metrics from within the App at any time.
- Delete the App. Removing the App from your device removes the data stored on it.
- Manage your subscription. You control renewals and cancellation in your Apple App Store account settings.
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR or the CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict the processing of personal information, and to object to certain processing. Because we do not maintain accounts or store your photos, much of your data is only accessible on your own device; for questions about anonymous analytics or to exercise a right, contact us using the details below.
10. Children’s privacy
Contour is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will address it.
11. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect information, including encrypted connections for scan analysis and keeping sensitive data on your device. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we design the App to minimize what leaves your phone in the first place.
12. International users
Where information (such as a photo being analyzed, or an anonymous analytics event) is processed, it may be handled on servers located outside your country. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such processing.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the App after an update takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
